Step 1: Pre-Cleaning Inspection

To provide you with the best cleaning and care service, we carry out a complete inspection of your rug’s:

Fiber identity (100% silk or silk blend)

Construction type (hand-knotted, flat-weave, or machine-made)

Dyes and colorfastness

Pre-existing stains, fading, or fiber damage

At this stage the technician establishes a plan for the best cleaning solutions and processes based on the fiber identity, potential dye bleeding, and potential weakening of the silk.

Step 2: Removal of Dry Soil

Silk rugs can hold significant amounts of fine dust and debris which will work down into the fabric and in time cause fiber wear. We use gentle compressed air dusting equipment (not beater bars) to remove dry-soil deep down before we begin wet-cleaning your rug.

Wools of New Zealand (which is primarily concerned with wool) provides a parallel model of care with the following important principles: avoid using anything that can be abrasive in agitation of wool/silk and to remove particulate soil before engaging in any wet treatment.

Step 3: Safe Hand Washing for Silk

Using pH balanced, enzyme-free detergents and cold water, we hand wash your silk rug to very gently remove soil, oils and stains. Our technicians are careful not to over-wet or saturate silk fibers because it will make them stiffer and sometimes shrinkage can happen.

Step 4: Spot vs. Stains

When we clean spots, such as wine, ink, makeup, or pet spots, we treat each spot independently with silk-safe solutions. We carefully avoid abrasive scrubbing or over-wetting because both of these types of cleaning methods will not only damage the luster of the silk but also damage the alignment of the silk fibers.

Step 5: Rinsing and Drying under control

After cleaning your rug, we completely rinse your rug and place it into our climate-controlled drying chamber. We dry flat with filtered air and low humidity to prevent dye migration, buckling or brittleness from setting in. We never dry silk with direct heat sources.

Step 6: Final Grooming/Inspection

After drying your heirloom rug, we then hand groom the rug to restore the pile and restore the natural sheen silk has. Before preparing the rug for return, we also perform a final inspection to ensure your rug does not have any remaining residues or any other issues.
