Why Shag Rugs Need Professional Cleaning

In comparison to styles of rugs that have fibers (pile) that are shorter than one inch, shag rugs often have fibers (pile) that are extremely long. The fibers (pile) of shag rugs usually are anywhere from 1 inch to 3 inches long or longer in some cases.

The most common styles of shag rugs are:

• Flokati (Greek-styled wool shag rugs)

• Synthetic plush or microfiber shag rugs

• Tufted or woven shag rugs

• Retro style acrylic or polyester shag rugs

Given the pile depth, and flexibility or malleability of fibers in shag rugs, shag rugs are easily subjected to:

❌ Matting & pile compression

❌ Dust, sand, pet dander, and food trapped in the lower pile

❌ Odors occupying lower pile or backing of the rug

❌ Fiber damage from excessive brushing or steam cleaning

❌ Frayed and shortened strands or tufts that have loosened

Shag rugs cannot be conveniently cleaned at home as they can take days to dry and can get damaged using standard carpet care equipment.

Mo’s rug & more has the expertise and equipment to safely and effectively clean shag rugs.

Our Strategy for Shag Rug Cleaning

Every shag rug is treated uniquely based on fibre, height and condition.

1. Inspection and Pile Assessment

We will assess the rug’s fibre (wool, acrylic, polyester, cotton, etc.), backing, stain locations, and how the pile reacts to agitation or moisture. This gives us direction for the safest cleaning method.

2. Dry Dust Removal

We utilize a rug duster or gentle air/wave system to agitate and release the dry soil and debris from the fibres, far beyond the reach of vacuums. This is essential because it protects the foundation of your rug.

3. Pre-Treatment and Spot Cleaning

We pre-treated stains, pet accidents and high traffic with safe treatment solutions compatible with the fibres. For Flokati’s and natural shag we also used safe shampoo for wool when possible.

4. Controlled Washing or Foam Cleaning

Depending upon the construction of the rug we used the following:
• Low moisture encapsulation for tufted synthetic shag rugs
• Hand washed and rinsed for Flokati and natural fibre rugs
• Foam cleaned and lightly brushed for shag rugs with high sensitivity backing
Once again, we took care with retainig the backing moisture rate not being overtly saturated or too soft causing shedding

5. Rinsing & Detangling

After washing the shag, the rug is gently rinsed out to ensure there is no residue left, and then detangled using combing tools that are designed for longer fibers. The result is an improved fluffed appearance, and reducing the chances of matting.

6. Controlled Drying & Fluffing

The rug is then laid flat in a humidity-controlled environment for drying to eliminate any likelihood of odor or mildew. Once dry, we groom the pile to help it regain the bounce and soft texture inherent in the fiber of the shag rug.
