Reasons Why Jute Rugs Must be Cleaned by an Expert

Jute is a bast fiber made from the stalks of the jute plant, like hemp or flax. It is highly absorbent, vulnerable to abrasion, and can discolor or even shrink if exposed to too much water or alkali substances.

That is why jute rugs need professionals to handle it:

  • Water sensitivity: Jute can discolor, wrinkle, or even rot when oversaturated.
  • Stain friendly: The speed of the spilling can absorb into jute fiber and, without proper extraction, the stain can permanently stay.
  • Fiber damage: Scrubbing too hard or using strong detergents on jute can cause the jute fiber to break or fuzz.
  • Mildew: Due to the slow drying of jute fiber, improper cleaning will often present high levels of mold and mildew development.

From the perspective of the International Journal of Textile Science, due to its structure, jute is classified as one of the least moisture-tolerant of natural fibers not allowing much room for error; that is why dry-cleaning as a controlled process has become the gold standard in the industry.

OurJute RugCleaning Process

We follow a specialized procedure to assure the jing does not lose its structure, texture, and color; the only way to do this is through a particular process we can to clean your jute rug gently. Unlike commercial type companies who will clean any area rug the same way, we know one-size-fits-all is not the way to go with plant fibers.

  1. Thorough Inspection

We will inspect the weave of the rug, the construction, fiber type and type of condition of the rug. We look for color-fastness and backing integrity too for jute area rugs with latex backing.

  1. Dry Soil Extraction

We will then carefully extract dry soil that has been ground into your rug with either compressed air dusting or vibration techniques, NO vacuum beater bars (they damage fibers). This is one of the most critical steps. Jute rugs can hold fine particulate matter deep within their weave to an alarming extent.

  1. Low-Moisture Spot-Cleaning

We will pre-treat each spot and spill using either dry-cleaning solvents or encapsulating agents (which effectively resemble dry cleaning), NEVER a water-based shampoo. We want to avoid over-wetting because it can cause color loss, shrinkage and fiber breakdown.

  1. Dry Foam or Encapsulation Cleaning

We will perform either low-moisture foam cleaning or dry compound extraction to remove soil without saturating or soaking the rug. In this technique of cleaning, we only clean the upper fibers of the jute rug demonstrating how effectively this cleans, as the internal structure will remain untouched and dry.

  1. pH-Balanced Neutralizing Rinse

In cases when there’s moisture used, we follow with a controlled pH rinse to avoid alkaline residue that can attract dirt and cause yellowing.

  1. Rapid Controlled Drying

Jute needs to be dried immediately to avoid mildew or water stains. We put the rug into our drying room at just the right humidity and temperatures, to allow both sides of the rug to dry evenly.

  1. Grooming & Final Inspection

Finally, we hand groom the rug and inspect for any areas that require touch-up. Also, we will offer optional fabric protector for future spot resistance.

We Can Clean All Jute Rugs:

✅ Flat-Weave Jute Rugs – Very common in coastal or bohemian-style homes

✅ Jute-Backed Area Rugs – Most often under wool or synthetic rugs

✅ Braided Jute Rugs – Usually in country-style and rustic décor

✅ Jute-Sisal or Jute-Seagrass Blends – Finally, never seen without knowing it, used in many eco-friendly commercial locations

We are also trained in cleaning jute blends with wool, cotton, or polyester, as they require custom techniques based off fiber content.

How Often Should Jute Rugs Be Cleaned?

We recommend professionally cleaning every 12–18 months, or more frequently if you have high traffic or pets. The IICRC recommends naturally-made rugs be inspected and cleaned regularly to avoid long term fiber damage and contamination from soil and organic materials.

If your Jute rug is shedding, darkened, or smells musty, you should let Mo’s Rug & More take a look.
