Why Hand-Knotted Rugs Need Specialized Cleaning

Hand-knotted rugs are woven using thousands of individual knots on a loom, unlike machine-made or tufted rugs. The meticulous construction makes them very durable, but sensitive to harsh chemicals, over-wetting, and machine agitation.

As time passes, dust, dirt, dog dander, spills, and foot traffic all settle deep within the foundation of the rug, causing fiber weakness, and color fading. Using the wrong cleaning processes can lead to:

• Color bleeding

• Compromised strength of the knot structure

• Shrinking or warping

• Loss of wool luster or softness of pile or reducing the pile height

At Mo’s Rug & More, we understand that hand-knotted rugs are very delicate and will use artisan-tested, tool-safe cleaning methods to restore your rug back to its origin, without damaging it.

Our Hand-Knotted Rug Cleaning Process

Every hand-knotted rug we service gets the same level of care and respect. Our cleaning process will always be customized to the rug’s origins, materials (wool, silk, cotton), materials (if dyed; stable dye or food dye), soiling, etc.

1. Inspection

A full inspection is conducted before cleaning to ascertain the rugs weave, material, condition, stains, dye stability, moth damage, or other repairs that may need to be done prior to cleaning. Dry soil is the primary cause of enduring damage to rugs. We use a combination of compressed air or gentle vibration to encourage deep-set dust and grit to dislodge from both sides of the rug, but without disturbing the pile.

3. Color-Fastness Testing

Before we begin washing, we carry out a dye test to check for any bleed or fade of color through the cleaning process. The use of a dye stabilizer may be used, should there be particularly vivid colors.

4. Gentle Hand Washing

Every hand-knotted rug is washed entirely by hand, with shampoos that are pH-balanced for natural wool or silk. The fibers are gently massaged while washing to release oils, dirt and stains; while ensuring that stress is not applied to the foundation.

5. Soft Water Rinsing

The rug is rinsed thoroughly by softened water, using a controlled-temperature rinse to remove soaps and contaminants, ideally leaving no residue.

6. Controlled Drying

Rugs are dried flat in our climate-controlled facility. During drying, we shape and groom the pile to preserve the natural lay and turn the rug over to dry both sides.

7. Fringe and Finishing

Fringes are hand cleaned and combed. We do a final grooming of the pile and brush it to restore softness, texture and consistency.
