What is the difference with Hand-Tufted Rugs?

Hand-tufted rugs are similar to hand-knotted rugs because they have the same look, but hand-tufted rugs take less time to produce and are less expensive. Instead of tying knots like in hand-knotted rugs, we use a tufting gun and punch yarn through a canvas. The canvas backing and finished rug are secured with latex glue and cloth. The fibers being shorter and far denser and have more pile height make hand-tufted rugs feel nice and soft underfoot. Hand-tufted rugs have disadvantages as well, with moisture and heat being two of the most significant concerns. Cleaning them improperly, or too harshly will result in:
• De lamination (the rugs layers separate)
• Fiber petting/fuzzing
• Degradation of the latex and nasty odors
• Bubbling or warping of the rug surface
This is why machine scrubbing or steam cleaning can ruin a hand-tufted rug. At Mo’s Rug & More, we ensure to employ low-moisture cleaning techniques that help to protect the surface fibers and the internal structure as well.

What is our Cleaning Process?

We begin every cleaning with a rug inspection to determine the safest and best approach. Here is how we take care of tufted rugs:

1. Pre-Cleaning Inspection

In the inspection, we be looking for glue failure, odor build-up, pet stains, loose tufts, dyes stability, and the wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber blend.

2. Dry Soil Extraction

Dust, dry soil, or other debris trapped in the pile is removed with controlled suction or vibration. This method removes almost all contamination and therefore, minimizes wear and tear before going into the wash.
3. Low-Water Surface Cleaning

We apply a wool-safe or fiber-safe solution to the surface of the rug in a light application to avoid over-soaking the rug and ruining the backing or latex adhesive. Stains are treated using the hand method and spot-removal methods.

4. Odor Treatment & Pet Stains (if applicable)
We treat rugs containing pet accidents or musty odors with enzyme deodorizers specifically designed to remove bacteria from the rug without damaging it.

5. Controlled Drying

Rugs will then be dried flat in a controlled climate. This will be the most critical part of the cleaning process, as it will reduce bubbling from forming, prevent excess shrinking of the rug, and will not disrupt the glue. We will not hang tufted rugs similar to conventional wool rugs.
6. Final Grooming

We brush and lift the pile to clean the rug and indicate texture and softness. In the final grooming or inspection phase, we will check for odor(s), additional spots needing attention, repairs, etc.
