What Exactly is a Hooked Rug?

Hooked rugs are made by hooking loops of yarn or cloth onto a base cloth, usually burlap, linen or cotton. These loops create a pile of texture that is often playful and soft.

Hooked rugs are noted for:

• Vintage and folk-art characteristics
• Bold patterns, playful designs and hand-crafted appeals
• Attention to wear, humidity and moisture
• Potentially unlooping or breaking loops if handled too aggressively

Hooked rugs are generally made with wool, cotton or synthetic fibers and used in entryways, bedrooms, and seasonal spaces like cabins or vacation homes.

Why Hooked Rugs Require Specialized cleaning

Because hooked rugs are looped and not knotted or sheared they are far more fragile during the clean process. Common hazards include:
• Pulling or breaking of loops from brushes or vacuums
• Fraying edges due to too aggressive agitation.
• Color bleeding due to unstable dye mixtures.
• Backing separating due to moisture or heat.
• You may distort the texture and pile if you scrub over scrub the fibers.
At Mo’s Rug & More we know how to clean hooked rugs safely and gently using effects from time, proven techniques that pertain specifically to their construction.

Our Hooked Rug Cleaning Process

Our firm has a specialized process that has been designed to clean thoroughly, and at the same time, not disturb the looped pile or damage the base cloth.

1. Inspection & Fiber Information/Assessment

We will inspect the fiber type of your rug (wool, cotton, blends), construction type (i.e. hand-hooked or machine-made), look for fragile spots, check for odor buildup, and ask about any previous repairs. If the rug appears to be antique or handmade we will proceed with extra caution.

2. Dry Soil Removal

Controlled suction or hand agitation prior to washing. We avoid rough brushing or vacuuming because those routines may catch the loops, resulting in breakage.

3. Dye Testing & Stabilization

We will test for bleed and fade on the dark or bright areas of natural dye, to determine if we need to react first. If necessary, we can apply a color stabilizer to prevent bleeding and fading, and we will let you know what we are going to use and why.

4. Low-Moisture Cleaning

We will use a fiber-safe solution that is pre-approved by you for surface cleaning. The moisture will be tightly controlled so that labeling of the backing does not occur from damage, de lamination does not occur, or if the rug back shrinks and warps, etc. As much as you hoped to eliminate stains, we will take care of each one of them individually.

5. Odor & Bacteria Treatment (If Applicable)

For rugs as a result of pets, spills, or musty odors, we will apply safe antimicrobial treatments that will effectively eliminate odors without damaging the structure of the fiber.

6. Flat Drying & Grooming

The rug is laid flat and dried in a temperature controlled and humidity controlled environment which allows us to dry the rug flat, holds its shape, and allows for any edge curling to be remedied. Once that is done, we will hand groom the pile and once again smooth any loops.
