Signs Your Silk Area Rug Requires Cleaning
Silk rugs can often be used more as decoration than for function, and when placed in low-traffic parts of your home, it is easy to forget to clean them over the years. Just like any other rug, drinking glasses, spills, pet accidents, allergens, and dust will begin to accumulate over time, even if they still look outstanding.
Below are signs that your silk area rugs require professional cleaning:
• Dull, crushed pile
• Abnormal stiffness or hardness
• Odors (Particularly musty or moldy)
• Stains from spills or pet accidents
• Discoloration from sun exposure or water
If you have any concerns about these issues showing on your silk area rugs, don’t delay! The sooner you treat your rugs, the less chance of permanent damage.
Our ProfessionalSheepskin RugCleaning Process
We utilize a proprietary multi-step cleaning process that is specifically designed for natural hide and wool rugs (like sheepskin), in order to remove soil, stains, and odors without compromising on softness or structure.
Step 1: Pre-Inspection & Testing
We assess the sheepskin for stains, odors, flexing of the hide to check for any fiber damage and also test the stability of any dyes (particularly ivory, grey, or dyed) to determine if we can clean the hide.
Step 2: Removal of Dry Soil
Using air dusting and gentle manual brushing we lift out and dissolve the embedded dust, grit, pet dander, and other debris. This is a wool- and leather-safe method of agitation so we do NOT use a machine for this step.
Step 3: Spot Treatment & Stain Removal
We manually apply an effective wool-safe low-moisture stain removing solution to bad areas like urine stains, food spills, or discoloured patches with little overwetting of the hide.
Step 4: Washing and Recapturing Hide Quality
We use a specifically tailored lanolin-rich wool wash, we either wash the wool fibers by hand or in a submerged state (only if suitable). We never use hot water and harsh soap, which breaks down the natural oils and makes the rug stiff.
Step 5: pH-Balanced Rinse & Rehydrating the Fiber
Once cleaning is finished, we will follow up with a light acidic rinse to bring the wool pH back to normal balance to help protect the fiber from becoming brittle. We will also add some gentle conditioning to the hide to avoid stiffness and/or cracking.
Step 6: Controlled Flat Drying
We will take your rug and flatten it into a controlled temperature and humidity drying room, dry without any curl of the hide. The wool will also be fluffed and brushed while drying.
Step 7: Final Grooming & Inspection
Once the rug is dry, we must brush the wool pile to bring back softness and the natural direction. We will give the rug a final inspection for quality to ensure both fleece and hide look and feel revitalized.
We Clean ALL Types of Sheepskin Rugs:
✅ Single-Pelt Sheepskin Rugs – Popular for throws or bedside rugs.
✅ Double & Quad Sheepskin Rugs – Sewn together for longer lengths.
✅ Dyed Sheepskin Rugs – Light grey, charcoal, blush, custom colors.
✅ Medical-Grade Sheepskin Pads – Typically used for comfort and pressure relief.
We also do Mongolian, Icelandic, and curly wool sheepskins, which are a bit more tedious as they have their own grooming and drying techniques.

How Frequently Should You Clean a Sheepskin Rug?
Sheepskin rugs are recommended to be cleaned every 12-18 months or faster if used often, pet activity, or frequent spills.
Woolmark company recommends general grooming and light spot cleaning to maintain wool fiber elasticity and prevent matting on your fine wool rug but remember that for a deep, odor-free, clean that lasts, you need professionals on your side.
